Most beautiful girl gives water to construction workers

The front page of the Chongqing Evening News shows a young woman, with the headline: “Most beautiful girl buys water for 80 construction workers in the scorching sun.” She is currently taking the graduate school entrance exams and her living expenses are only 500 yuan per month (about $80 USD).

The girl’s name is Hu Ruidan (胡蕊丹). She is 21 years old and a freshman at Yangtze Normal University, studying financial management and accounting. The story is as follows: On July 9^th, she was taking money out of the ATM when the machine swallowed her card and ate her cash. She went to the bank to see if the money had been removed from her account, and was very happy to find that it had not.  She was in an excellent mood on her walk back, and when she saw a bunch of construction workers slaving away in the summer heat, she thought to herself, “why not do something nice for the workers.” She noticed she had 50 yuan (about $8 USD) in her bag that she had meant to give to her boyfriend to pay him back for something, but had forgotten. She decided to buy the construction workers some water. She spent all the money on water.

The article in the Chongqing Evening News goes into detail about the journalist’s efforts to get in contact with the girl, and find out what motivation was behind her act of kindness toward the workers. First he interviewed the workers, and finds out that this girl simply showed up and started handing out cold water without saying a word. The manager of the construction site had mildly interrogated her about who she was and why she was handing out water. He told the reporter what university she was studying at. The reporter then called her up at the university and found her totally unwilling to talk. She told him: “Don’t bother me about that, it was just a small thing. I’ve already got people online saying it was a ploy for media attention. Its annoying.”

After she refused a phone interview, the reporter then drove down to her university and cornered her in the library. She was on the second floor, and seemed quite surprised to see him. The reporter said she was wearing a dress, and looked quiet and beautiful. He managed to interview her, and asked her why she decided to give water out, and why she didn’t want to give an interview about. She said it was just a small thing, that she noticed they were hot and had been working out there for days, and wanted to do something nice. She didn’t want and interview because she didn’t want all the hype and pressure of public opinion.
