It is a big shock to me! I have been believing that China is one of the safest country as I have not heard one gunshot in my life other than my military training. I am taking care of my lovely nephew for my sister at preset in the "boom city", and half an hour ago, I raised from my seat to double check with my mom if she is with the four-years-old cutie all the time. I could not help it! The story is horrible! Hope that some day the police can modify their priority. If information is disclosed in advance, we can manage to avoid lots of tragedies.

In future articles, please desist from the unhelpful practice of simply using surnames, especially when repeat mentions occur far away from the original. There are just too many people surnamed Li & Wang to retain clarity -- take your paragraphs above where there's a Li Hao and a Li Xiang, both being referred to as simply "Li" within a sentence of each other!

The "habit" from English-language journalism of using simply the surname "works" to both shorten the reading "load" (repeating "Jonathan Winterbottom" gets old fast) and because there is a far greater "range" of names in the first place so clarity is not compromised.

Shortening Yang Yi, Wang Er, and Zhang San to "Yang Wang and Zhang" makes no sense for space-saving, and impairs clarity significantly.

NOTE FROM JEREMY GOLDKORN: This is a very good point. Danwei will amend its style guide accordingly.

In an environment in which local authorities want to alleviate public fears quickly and rely heavily on confessions (often coerced), there are still more victims - innocent citizens wrongfully convicted and sometimes wrongfully executed for these heinous crimes.

This from a friend: "I've been wondering about Chinese serial killers since being at the Shenzhen Daily, where a story about a guy who killed 30+ children and put their bodies in the walls and rafters of his home got buried in the back of the paper and cut to about 5 or 6 inches. Meanwhile, a short time later, they ran a two-page spread on the Green River Killer in Washington state as if to say, 'See what depraved lunatics run amok in the USA!'" The problem is arguably far worse than the USA in fact but the official attitude is to ignore it or treat each case as a gross aberration -- complete with apology if absolutely necessary.
